What You Should Know About the MIKA-D Test
Children who are not native German speakers and move to Austria are required to take the MIKA-D test after starting school. The assessment aims to determine whether the child has the necessary German language skills to participate successfully in school education. With adequate practice, every child can successfully pass the MIKA-D test.
Purpose and Format of the Test
The MIKA-D measures German language competency. It is primarily used at the start of school and during the early years of primary education. There is a version for primary school (“Primarstufe”) and one for secondary school (“Secondary Level”). The test lasts up to 30 minutes and is not an exam, so students do not receive a grade.
Assessed Language Areas
The MIKA-D tests various language areas, such as vocabulary and reading comprehension. In primary school, it assesses the vocabulary section (picture description), the question-and-answer section, storytelling based on images (3–4 pictures), and sentence comprehension (by selecting images). In secondary school, the test also includes text completion.
Results and Exemption
The oral test assesses children’s expressive and communication skills at a simple sentence level. If a child does not reach the minimum level on the MIKA-D test, they may be exempted from grading for two years. This gives the child time to reach the language proficiency needed to complete school tasks successfully.
